Inside and outside the fence

By Sabine Popp

There has always existed a clear sense of inside and outside in Iceland. Inside the fence, at the farm. Outside, that means the uncontrollable wilderness. Fences were built to keep this uncontrollable outside. (Meanwhile we in other countries often think of fences as means for keeping something inside, but this would be about property then…)

Inside is culture. Outside is nature.

The idea of inside and outside relates to the human psyche as well. The individual being strives for keeping the uncontrollable at distance. Ignoring it. No matter how much it is partaking in creating it at the same time.
