seaweed meditations #3

By Sabine Popp

Seaweed has had a long – but almost forgotten – tradition in our part of the world. So in Iceland (where søl even is mentioned in the sagas). As food for sheep, as fertilizer for the soil, as human nourishment.

Beside of the Sushi-boom it is more seriously discussed that seaweed might be one of the solutions to counter a global food crisis. It has a broad specter of technological (and economical) potential for the future. It has - in common with the fish - the sea as environment. And just as once the fish, it is regarded to be a natural resource in great abundance.

It is said that farming and fishing have long been the main pillars of Icelandic identity and economy. Seaweed could fit into this tradition and continue it.  The soil and the sea. Opening new roads to employment after diverse financial crises. Hope and perspectives for remote communities in countries of a world community.
